Hermit Crab in Fiji

On day trip to deserted beach spot on Qamea Island in Fiji we spotted this amazingly large hermit crab. So large that a still image didn’t capture it’s essence. This clip does – especially at the end when you see the scale compared to the footprints.

New Hermit Crab Tank Set Up

this is my hermit crab set up. It took some major puzzle skills to get everything to fit and as you can tell some things are dug under the sand. It’s a hermit’s paradise. plenty of hiding places. lots to climb on. plenty of shells to choose from and both salt water and fresh water cleaned specifically for hermit crabs. the humidity is a little too hight for them right now but after a few hours of the light and heater and no top then it will be back to 80%. usually I have a blanket on top with a few gaps to keep the humidity in. I need a plastic top to help keep the humidity in better but can’t find one that will work because they aren’t secure enough.

Hermin the hermit crab at feeding time

This is Hermin the Hermit Crab. He’s bit upset since he can’t get through the gap in the rock to catch his dinner, eventually he gets his meal. I don’t know his age but I have had him over two years now. He’s about the size of a baseball and he has a huge appetite for clams. He gets fed three times a week and you can see in this video, he is very aggresive about protecting his catch. He lives in a 75 gallon saltwater tank with a 5+ inch Trigger named Bubba.

This is my hermit crab Stripz. He’s done some pretty extreme stuff before but never this extreme!
